THE 4 PASSENGER BARGE libje

A word from the owner: "Join us for a comfortable and informal cruise as we introduce you to this fascinating, secret corner of France that still retains its Celtic heritage. We are the only crewed hotel barge holiday of its kind in Brittany, a truly individual experience that we are sure you will enjoy. Explore the beautiful and different countryside of Brittany with us on' Libje', our beautifully restored and spacious 24metre classic Dutch barge, as we gently travel the rivers and canals of this unique part of France. Relax as we take you to the parts of Brittany that the car bound visitor can never see, whilst enjoying the best of local produce either on board, courtesy of our award winning chef or at one of the many excellent local restaurants. See the megalithic monuments that predate the pyramids, the gorgeous medieval towns and villages that sprang up along the river banks, the gentle fertile countryside, the lush natural woodland and the unhurried and uncommercial lifestyle that is Brittany. With a maximum of only four guests in our 2 large luxurious en-suite cabins, you know this is going to be a very special holiday indeed." Your hosts: Ian & Jane Slade.

itinerary 1 - FROM ROHAN

Saturday departures from Rohan - Wednesday: departures from St Martin Sur Oust

SATURDAY - 4 pm

Pick up guests at either Rennes airport, hire car depot (Europcar in Redon the easiest) or Redon train station. Drive to Libje (approx 1hr 20min) for guests to unpack and settle in. Drinks on deck. Saturday pm guests eat out at a choice of 3 restaurants. 1) La Gavotte; a really excellent family run creperie if they prefer a smaller meal. 2) Le Petit Tonneau; another family business specialising in steaks and Italian cuisine. A nice friendly little place. 3) L’eau D’oust. An excellent quality restaurant with gorgeously presented gourmet food at a very reasonable price. One of the best places we have eaten in in all our travels through France. We have a menu on board and can pre order by phone.

SUNDAY - 10 am

Depart Rohan for a whole day of cruising on the quietest and most lightly used part of the canal. Stopping at 12 for lunch at a small quay. Afternoon, we continue downstream to eventually arrive around 4.30pm at La Tertraie which is where we moor for the winter. This is next to the little village of Pomeleuc. Known to the locals as "the village that time forgot", it sits next to the river and has a remarkable little church that dates back to the 13thC. The interior can only be described as remarkable. Dinner on board!

MONDAY- 9.30 am

Depart LaTertraie for Josselin, arriving around mid-day. Lunch on board. Afternoon can be spent exploring this gorgeous medieval town with its galleries, craft shops and restaurants. Alternatively we can head down to the south coast to visit Port Louis which is a fort built by the Spanish to defend the port of Lorient. Port Louis houses 4 museums in the building highlighting the French lifeboat service, Underwater archaeology, The French East India company and its trade, and naval history. Views from the ramparts over Lorient bay. Another option is a visit to the lovely little medieval port of St.Goustin at Auray. Very scenic little spot with lots of art galleries, timbered buildings and seafood restaurants by the quay side..! Dinner is taken by guests at any of the Josselin’s many restaurants. We can advise. There are choices of everything from family creperies to Breton specialty to gourmand.

We head downstream once more to the ancient town of Malestroit. Malestroit was founded in the 900’s and has some fascinating timbered buildings with medieval carvings. After lunch on board we head off by car to the craft village of La Gacilly. La Gacilly is host to both a large concentration of craftsmen and women where you can watch them actually working. The village is also home to the largest outdoor photo exhibition in all of France. There is so much to see that there is no way you will manage to take it all in! We then return to Malestroit where guests eat dinner out in Malestroit at one of a wide choice of restaurants.

THURSDAY- 9 am

After breakfast on board this is market day in Malestroit. Enjoy a quick wander round town and take in the sights and sounds of a French street market. 10.30am. A must see. In the afternoon after lunch provided by us at our favourite creperie, we head downstream through some of the prettiest stretches of canal to St Martin Sur Oust where we provide dinner on board for your last night. Depending on time available we sometimes also manage to fit in a visit to the megaliths at Monteneuf. A series of standing stones erected over 5,000 years ago. *NOTE. Thursday. We are always flexible and if guests would prefer to spend more time in Malestroit and skip Rochefort, or swap Rochefort for Monteneuf that’s fine with us.
